Dr. Atul Padalkar obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering,
followed by a Ph.D. in the area of ‘Alternative Refrigerants’ under the guidance of Dr.
Devotta. Dr. Devotta had been associated with work which was recognized for the award of
the Nobel Peace Prize to IPCC in 2007. He started his career as a
Lecturer at Rajarambapu Institute of Technology, Islampur. Subsequently, he has served
various prestigious institutions in the capacity of Dean, Principal, Professor, and
Assistant Professor at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), Sinhgad College of
Engineering, Pune (2003–2011), and AISSMS College of Engineering, Pune (1996–2003)
respectively. He has been instrumental in starting the Technology Department at
Savitribai Phule Pune University.
He is actively associated in key leadership positions with various technological
institutions and professional bodies including the Indian Science Congress, National
Institute of Virology (Pune), ASHRAE, ISHRAE, Institution of Engineers (I), and the
Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), New Delhi as Advisor, Member, and Life
Member. He has also served as the Chairman of ISTE Maharashtra & Goa, and President
of Engineering Sciences at the Indian Science Congress.
His contributions, particularly the development of room air conditioners with
HC-290 (Hydrocarbon Technology) and the handbook on good servicing of
room air conditioners under the aegis of German Technical Cooperation (GIZ),
Germany, have been recognized widely in the field of Engineering and
Industrial Research. His pioneering work in hydrocarbon technology in air conditioners
has been appreciated by UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) and
the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR), Paris. He has
served as a technical consultant for major corporate houses like GIZ Germany, Blue Star,
Thermax Ltd., and Godrej Appliances Ltd., providing key engineering support for product
design and development.
Dr. Padalkar has published over seventy research papers in prestigious national and
international conference proceedings, bulletins, and journals. Key publications include
“Performance Assessment of Air Conditioners Using Propane” in the Official
Journal of Centro Studi Galileo (CSG) and European Energy Center (EEC), Special
International Issue (ISI), UNEP (2010), and “Performance Assessment of Air
Conditioners with HC290” in the Bulletin of the IIR (2010), which was
subsequently translated and published in Spanish and French languages.
